Gold Panning Courses

You can try to pan for gold in special panning tanks outside the museum. Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes and if you follow the gold panners instructions you will definitely find a few flakes of REAL gold to take home with you, along with a certificate to confirm that you found real gold in Scotland’s’ Highest Village. You do not require a licence for this experience.
Timing of the taster sessions varies. These sessions can be booked on arrival.
Cost per person £9.50.
Tickets
The 5 hour course includes the services of our experienced gold panner Leon Kirk, use of all the necessary equipment, gold panning permit and packed lunch.

Gold Panning Equipment and Licence Information
If you would like to try panning without the services of our gold panner, gold pans can be hired from the Museum Shop at a cost of £6.50 per day with a £20 deposit. If you wish to pan in any area of Wanlockhead Waters and Mennock Waters you will need to purchase a licence. The area is owned by Buccleuch Estate and we sell the licences on their behalf.
Please note: If you want to gold pan on Elvan Water, Short Clough and tributaries you will need a licence from The Hopetoun Estate.

Please note that if you are panning in any area on the Buccleuch Estate you need to be able to produce your licence on request by any authorised person on behalf of Buccleuch Estates.
