Visitors get the chance to pan for gold in tanks outside the museum. Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes and if you follow the gold panners instructions you will definitely find a few flakes of REAL gold to take home with you, along with a certificate to confirm that you found real gold in Scotland’s’ Highest Village.
Cost per person £6.50.
If you would like to try panning without the services of our gold panner, gold pans can be hired from the Museum Shop at a cost of £3.50 per day with a £20 refundable deposit. You will also require to purchase a gold panning license which is as below,
Licenses can also be purchased from the Museum shop and the cost (from 1st January 2022):
For Individuals : £10.00 for one day / £25.00 for one week / £50.00 for one year.
For Family : £20.00 for one day / £50.00 for one week / £100.00 for one year.
Gold Panning Licences are available from our online shop and from Reception at the Museum of Lead Mining during the open season.
If you wish to pan in any area of Wanlockhead Waters and Mennock Waters you will need to purchase a Licence. The area is owned by Buccleuch Estate and we sell the licences on their behalf.
Licence Costs (as at 1 January 2022):
Individual Licence – Day £10.00, Week £25.00, Year £50.00
Family Licence – Day £20.00, Week £50.00, Year £100.00
Please note that if you are panning in any area on the Buccleuch Estate and you need to be able to produce your licence on request by any authorised person on behalf of Buccleuch Estates.
