The 5 hour course includes the services of our experienced gold panner Leon Kirk, use of all the necessary equipment, panning permit and packed lunch.

5 Hour Gold Panning Course Dates for 2019

The 2019 dates for our 5 hour gold panning courses are:-

  •  No May course due to the Gold Panning Championships to be held in Wanlockhead, why not join us?  Dates to be confirmed but usually the last weekend of the month.

The two day course is advertised by the Museum of Lead Mining on Vince Thurkettles behalf, it includes two full days of tuition on all aspects of gold prospecting, with all equipment supplied, the services of Vince a former world champion gold panner and Chair of the World Gold Panning Association from 2003-2009.

As a memento, course participants will receive a sample of natural gold, a gold pan, an introductory gold prospecting book and a certificate of competence!

2 Day Course dates for 2020:

  • 26/27 and 28/29 May 2020.  Please email us for further information. 

(Please note that the Museum of Lead Mining does not take the payment for Vince Thurkettles course.)

Gold Panning taster sessions are also available daily during our opening season.

Visitors get the chance to pan for gold in tanks outside the museum. Each session lasts approximately 20 minutes and if you follow the gold panners instructions you will definitely find a few flakes of REAL gold to take home with you, along with a certificate to confirm that you found real gold in Scotland’s’ Highest Village.

Cost per person £5.10 or £4.50 when booked with full tour ticket.

If you would like to try panning without the services of our gold panner, gold pans can be hired from the Museum Shop at a cost of £3.50 per day with a £20 refundable deposit. You will also require to purchase a gold panning license which is as below,

Licenses can also be purchased from the Museum shop and the cost (from 1st March 2018):

For Individuals : £5.00 for one day / £10.00 for one week / £30.00 for one year.

For Family : £10.00 for one day / £20.00 for one week / £75.00 for one year.

Gold Panning Licences are available from the Museum of Lead Mining.

If you wish to pan in any area of Wanlockhead Waters and Mennock Waters you will need to purchase a Licence.  The area is owned by Buccleuch Estate and we sell the licences on their behalf.

Licence Costs (as at 14 February 2019):

Individual Licence – Day £5.00, Week £15.00, Year £30.00

Family Licence – Day £10.00, Week £30.00, Year £75.00


Please note that if you are panning in any area on the Buccleuch Estate and you need to be able to produce your licence on request by any authorised person on behalf of Buccleuch Estates.
