Talk – ‘Mining the Library’
Location:
Dates:
Speaker Anne Buddle, Trustee Wanlockhead Museum Trust, formerly NGS & V&A
The Miners’ Subscription libraries at Wanlockhead, Leadhills and Westerkirk were established over 200 years ago, by and for the miners themselves. At Wanlockhead, buried among gold-tooled volumes of sermons, education and self-help, there are also small, rich veins of humour and travel books.
Five readings – about a local mine visit in 1805; an 18C polar bear; a Dalkeith tailor; Sundays and Sanskrit; and a Turkish Spy in Paris in 1745 – will bring these books to life.
