Meadowfoot Graveyard
Most of us have a churches and a graveyard nearby and the gravestones are usually made of natural rock so you have the opportunity to visit a 'geological museum' on your door step and if you have a type of stone that is commonly found in your area, then this is where you will find it. You will also find many imported stones and in most graveyards you will find three different types of rock - igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.
Can you name the most common examples of each of the three different types of rock?
Look closely at the dates on the stones and this will help you assess which type of stone lasts longest, but sometimes you wont be able to read any inscription at all due to the weather wearing away the information.
What is your favourite type of stone?
What is the oldest date you can find in your local graveyard?
