      HI Mark

You can pan anywhere on the Mennock Waters but the lower end of the Mennock Water is closed for panning at the moment due to salmon spawning but will be reopened in May 2017. Any finds are kept by the panner. More details are on the reverse of the panning licenses. If you would like to purchase a license please send an e-mail to info@leadminingmuseum.co.uk and our VSO will get this sorted for you.

Hi I am looking to book 2 gold panning experiences for next year for my husband’s 50th birthday and his friend who is also turning 50.
I realise that the experiences for 2016 are now closed so if I could have a gift certificate to give to each of them that would be great.
I have a printer at home so if you emailed me the gift certificates I could print them ofor at home.
Can you please tell me how much these will cost me?

    Regards

    Gillian Peden

We are closed for the season and we are collating numbers for 2017, do you have a preference when you would like to do the gold panning course and also how many people would wish to take part. If you could contact us on info@leadminingmuseum.co.uk we will get back to you with availability for 2017

My wife of some 52 years ( we are now 70 )as had a long held passion to go gold panning, she has undergone a basic panning course, also she had an hour with a gentleman actually panning in your area.I am informed that the Menock burn bellow the bridge is out of bounds due to salmon spawning etc.until May 2017. However I was also advised that the other side of the hill from Leadhills towards the A76 is open for panning the year round. My question which side would you recommend for my wife’s initial solo panning experience ( I shall be with her of course)? PS my wife is very fit and active

      Hi Robert

Thanks for your enquiry. Yes you are correct that the Mennock is closed for Panning due salmon spawning. If you wish to pan on the Elvan Water then you will need to contact the Hopetoun Arms Hotel in Leadhills to obtain a license as this is the Hopetoun Estate. Of course people don’t broadcast where they find the gold, so it is pretty much the luck of the draw where you pan. But if popularity is a comparison, we have sold a substantial amount of licenses for the Buccleuch Estate compared with the Hopetoun Estate. Hope this helps, if you have any further questions, please get in touch.
